Motivation / State of the art / Relevance

Agricultural production plays important roles and significant contributes to social-economic-political activities in Brandenburg. Rapid changes in policies and regulations, market demands together with changing climatic and soil conditions especially under climate change context could strongly influence to farmer decisions and business (i.e. crop choice, cultivation area, and investment etc…) which might determine the crop production and productivity (yield). Understanding impacts of such drivers on crop production could inform the farmers and policy makers in terms of crop choices, their potential production, and the importance and relevance of agricultural and environmental policies/regulation under changing climatic conditions.

Objectives

The overall aim of this study is to investigate production status of some main crops in Brandenburg with regards of their production area, shares, and yield. The objectives of study are to (i) to collate and standardize the production and yield data from 2007-2025 for 14 counties (landkreis) in Brandenburg (ii) to analyze the long-term trend of crop production area, shares, and yield and (iii) to investigate and explain long-term trend of crop production and yield via linkages with some key social-policy-environmental changes.

Methodology / Procedure / Workscope / external cooperation

Type of study: Brandenburg, statistical data at county level. Students will have an opportunity to work in structured and long-term records of statistically published data. Student is also supposed to perform analysis of time series of crop production area and yield and to link with some key social-economic-environmental policies or climatic and soil conditions at the state, national, and regional levels.
