Research profile

In Europe, grasslands comprise the dominating vegetation in mountaneous regions, wetlands, and coastal areas whereby they appear to be less attractive to cultivate arable crops. On a world-wide scale, grassland covers more area than forests. They are as well a very important sink for carbon and nitrogen. Furthermore, grasslands are an excellent habitat for flora and fauna with extensive and complex diversity of plant communities. Their economic benefit is based on the production of meat and milk since pastures and meadows exclusively serve as a source of forage fed to ruminants.

Today's challenge of grassland production is to enable compatibility of economy and ecology. My research is therefore focussed on: 

• investigating effects of environmental conditions and management on biomass production, sward conditions and soil nutrient status on grassland

• linking plant functional traits to ecosystem functions and services 

• detection of grassland conditions (including communty plant functional traits) by remote sensing at small and medium scales.
